Angel of Hope
by Tess, Emma, and Molly E
Our team wanted to produce a story focused on our community, so we we took a close look at a project that one Washington High class participated in. Students wanted to show support and empathy for parents who have lost their child(ren). Our story is about a memorial that people see and never think twice about, the Angel of Hope.
The WHS Child Development class did a service project earlier in the school year. They dedicated it to three boys who tragically passed away in 2016. We wanted to combine the service project for those families in a way that would impact our viewers.
Molly went to the annual Angel of Hope Memorial Service to film b-roll. We had just learned about the service the day it happened, so we were glad to film it when we did, or else we would have missed a powerful moment.
After that, we interviewed Child Development teacher, Kristen Perriman, to get more information about the student’s service project. She had great insight into what the Angel of Hope stands for and what it means to her.
We also interviewed Christi Unnerstall, the moderator for the Angel of Hope. She shared a heartbreaking story about her brother who passed away and why the Angel of Hope helps her cope with the loss. She gave an interview that added a special voice to the story.
Our last interview was with Danielle Scharfenberg. She provided us with information about the service project that the Child Development class did for the Angel of Hope. She was very empathetic to the families whose children were lost.
After we slated and logged all three interviews, we then wrote our script and filmed our voice work. Once we were finished, we began the editing process. Editing was easy due to the incredible amount of b-roll we had of the monument and the memorial service. One shot that we are especially proud of is the one of the birds flying away at the end. As we were filming the Angel of Hope, we noticed above her many birds were flying away. We pointed the camera in their direction. We felt as though that really gave the story a symbolic and beautiful ending.
All three of us were impacted by producing this heartfelt story and we hope you enjoy watching it.
