A Mother's Dedication: Cathy Rennick
by Lindsay, Erin, and Kristen
For this round of stories, we chose the topic "Unsung Hero of Washington High School." This highlights a person who does a lot of behind the scenes work in support of the school.
Our minds immediately went straight to Cathy Rennick. We had seen her photographs online and in the hallways, and they never failed to impress. She was the perfect candidate for our story.
First, we ran the idea past Jared and he approved. Kristen and Lindsay met up with him one day during class for an interview in the wrestling room. Jared's love for his mother poured out genuinely through his words. This connection between mother and son would soon become a huge part of our story.
For a woman who is most comfortable appearing behind the camera, instead of in front of it, it took convincing from Jared for her to agree to talk on camera. Although we had to resort to setting up the interview in the echoing lobby, Cathy got comfortable and opened up to Lindsay quickly. She spoke with exalting love and passion about both her hobby and son.
It was exciting to see the story come together before we even started editing because of how well their words flowed together. After slating and logging, we created our script within the time frame of an hour.
The only complication that we faced while editing was attempting to remove the background noise from Cathy's interview. We couldn't fully resolve the audio issue, but it isn't too detrimental to the story.
To find broll of Jared, we searched through the stock footage that our staffers have filmed throughout the year. We were delighted to find that Cathy walked into a video of one of Jared's football games. We had broll of Cathy photographing a home wrestling meet that documented her dedication to photography.
All of these components worked well together to build the perfect story. We are super proud of our work and hope that Cathy and Jared love it, too.
