Cross Country Succeeds at State
When looking at topics for my backpack story, I knew I wanted to produce a sports story. Last year, I produced a story about the Girls' Basketball team for my backpack and I had a blast. I wanted to do something similar.
I saw Cross Country's success at State on the topic list, and I immediately knew I wanted to do it. I was a little worried that someone else would want to produce this story. I didn't want to tell a story I am not passionate about, but everything worked out, and this topic was mine!
In sports stories, it is really easy to accidentally make them a feature story about one person, especially with a State Cross Country champion on the team. I knew that I wanted to interview Mikayla Reed and Coach Olszowka, but deciding on a third person was tough for me, because I didn't know who would give the best information.
I ultimately chose to interview Anna Sullentrup because I was familiar with her from elementary school. Anna provided great information and really made the story come together.
Ms. Turner approved my script without any major hiccups and I was ready to edit! Laying in sound bites was very easy because I knew exactly where everything was, but unfortunately I struggled finding b-roll. It was hard to find variety, all I found was people crossing the finish line and awards ceremonies, so I had to get creative. Once I laid everything in, including the broll, I knew I had to cut some things out because it was very repetitive.
Once I cut redundant clips out, Ms. Turner sat with me and helped me clean up a few minor issues with the audio and video to help the story reach its full potential. I am very happy with the turnout and I hope you all enjoy!
