Some activities that take place at Washington High School are underappreciated. The Quiz Bowl program is an example. Speaking from my personal experience on the team, I know that not enough people are aware of the huge success the Quiz Bowl team has achieved.
Quiz Bowl is a competition between two teams who answer questions about a variety of topics including (but not limited to): history, literature, and science. It is extremely competitive. It can be very intense with each team trying to buzz in and answer the question before the other.
Our Quiz Bowl team is currently nationally ranked in the preseason for the first time ever. We are 22nd in the country. This is a huge accomplishment for everyone involved and even more exciting due to the fact that everyone who was on the team last year is returning. We are also very excited because we will be hosting the largest tournament in Missouri's history, with our own house-written questions that each member worked on creating.
One member of the team, junior Joe Stitz, was the third overall player in the state last year. With the two people ranked above him having graduated, he looks likely to be the most dominant player in all of Missouri this year. With him leading the team through the season and to the eventual national championship in June, the Quiz Bowl team looks to show everyone they are one of the top contenders in the country.
The next time you think of winners at WHS, I hope you take the time to think of Quiz Bowl.
Once, I almost got the school's mascot changed to a dead gorilla.
