Gun control has been a prime topic throughout the news lately. This year, Las Vegas and Sutherland Springs have been two areas facing devastating results of gun violence. Last year, it was Dallas and Orlando; before that, San Bernardino, Sandy Hook, Columbine...the list goes on and on. Still, Americans sit here magically waiting for something to change on its own. How many times does this have to happen for us to take action?
Once a shooting happens, society offers thoughts and prayers to the ones affected, but this happens every single time. It's nice to see that we can all come together as a nation and be strong in these times of need, but why can't we do the same thing for gun control efforts to stop these sorrowful times of need from happening in the first place?
I'm not saying that guns should be under lock and code, only to be used for specific situations. I believe there should be more restriction on the ability to get a gun in the United States. This could include further and more detailed background checks in order to have a gun in your possession. Right now, a random person could walk into the closest Walmart and purchase a gun with little questioning and a very little waiting period. This poses a serious threat to America and its people.
Today, we live in a gun-loving culture. According to CNN, "Americans own nearly half (48%) of the estimated 650 million civilian-owned guns worldwide." This goes to show that guns are popular and well-liked here. Many people have guns for self-protection or other uses like hunting, and they do not pose a serious threat. It's when a gun gets in the wrong hands that people's lives are all in danger. It is very hard to account for those situations, but taking action on stricter control of guns can limit the chances of it happening.
At the end of the day, mass shootings are a shocking and devastating event that constantly affect the nation we live in. Nothing will change if Americans don't take action to prevent these acts from occurring. America can't let its own nation destroy itself.
When will we be ready to step up for our country and take action to safe lives?
