The Little Free Library Movement Comes to Washington!
by Jonathan and Jaden
It was one of the first weeks in BJJTV when groups were assigned and stories were chosen. It didn’t take a lot of thought before we decided that the Little Free Library was the topic for us.
(Note: This was Jonathan and Autumn's first story, so they relied on and learned a lot from Jaden Heien’s past year of experience in Blue Jay Journal TV.)
First, we contacted Dawn Kitchell to set up an interview at the All Abilities Park, which is right next to one of the tiny libraries. It went well, despite the heat, and we got a lot of really good information that would be great for our story.
Bad news: the interview disappeared. When we got back to slate and log it, all the footage was gone.
Even though it was a little bit of a setback, we got right back to it. Contacting Dawn Kitchell again and we rescheduled the interview. This time we met with her at the Amtrak Station by the schoolhouse-style tiny library.
We double checked EVERYTHING before re-doing the interview.
Then, Jaden went out with her sister to film b-roll. It added a personal touch and was really cool to see the footage match up with the interview.
The whole editing process went fairly smooth. We got in the editing room a little late, but we caught up to the other group in the neighboring edit bay.
Having really good b-roll and a lot of it made our lives a whole lot easier! Extra b-roll always comes in handy, so take note! The story ended up being a little lengthy, but within reason. Dawn Kitchell had a great amount of information and we had a really hard time cutting it down and not using every little bit of the interview.
This was a really great story to work on. You can never go wrong with a story that is community focused and better yet, a story that is about educating the kids in our community!
Thank you for watching our story. We hope you enjoy it!
