Everyone here at Washington High School has a ton of opportunities to be their own person. There are so many different classes, clubs, meetings, and sports that students can get involved in.
From the beginning of my freshman year until now, I would say I have been pretty involved throughout all of high school. I am/have been involved in Student Council, Varsity Soccer, Blue Jay Journal TV, FBLA, and Health Occupations.
Some people may look at my list of activities and say I have done a lot. Yet, there may be others who will judge and simply say I have not accomplished a thing. Yes, I could’ve been more active and joined more clubs, but I think this was the right amount for myself.
One major opportunity that I was super-excited about going into my senior year was the Health Occupations class at Four Rivers Career Center. Not all classes at Four Rivers requires you to be a senior, but quite a few do. Going to Four Rivers gives students awesome opportunities, and I am thankful I decided to take advantage of what they have to offer.
If you find a program at Four Rivers that you think you might be interested in, sign up for it! Based upon my experiences so far, I think it's a win-win situation! I have made so many new friends from Union, New Haven, St. Clair, and even Hermann just from being in Health Occupations. I also get to explore many different jobs in the health field, and experience things first hand.
Another class I am so happy I applied for is BJJTV. Blue Jay Journal TV has been so good to me ever since I joined my junior year. I have made so many friends, and it has taught me skills that I can use throughout my life. I really like it because you often work with other students that aren't in your grade, so it forces you to connect with other people at school that you normally wouldn't get to know. The class is also very hands on, which is helpful in learning.
Overall, I cannot say it enough: If you are wanting to get more involved, do it!
I highly recommend that incoming freshmen look at all of the different options available. As a senior looking back at the past three years, there are so many different things I was clueless about that I now know exist.
Getting involved and taking advantage of the opportunities our school provides will only make you a better person. You will gain so many benefits from it.
Just remember, if you’re thinking about doing something that is completely out of your comfort zone, just do it. It'll be one of the best things you choose to do at WHS.
Been out of the country and back, but I love where I'm at. Soccer fanatic. Lover of animals, especially my great dane. I enjoy nature, too. Family first. #timetoshine
