Road Trip: Casey and Moonshine, Illinois
by Emma, Ellie and Autumn
We were all extremely excited that we had the opportunity to travel to Indianapolis, Indiana with our adviser for the JEA/NSPA National High School Journalism convention November 10-13.
We saw many interesting sites along the way, so our road trip story just fell into place. A town we passed through on the way was Casey, Illinois. This town was small and quaint, but there was something about it that made it unique. Casey is known for having some of the world’s largest items, and they are created right in the town!
At first, we saw the world’s largest ruler, and then noticed the largest pencil, rocking chair, windchimes, needle and crochet hook, bird cage, mailbox, and golf tee, just to name a few. Each item had a distinct characteristic... they were HUGE!
We were all amused by the largeness of the items, and decided to get up close and personal to each one and see what they were all about.
After driving through Casey, which took a lot longer than expected, we arrived at the Moonshine Store, located in Moonshine, Illinois. Moonshine has a population of only two people, just to give you an idea of how small it is.
It’s literally a building, which is the burger joint, and the owners live there. The burgers were absolutely fabulous! We all enjoyed seeing the store and we learned just how much it meant to some locals. Some of the folks come there every day on their lunch break, and they were very content with that.
As soon as we walked in the store, everyone looked over at us because we definitely stood out. You could tell we were not from around that area. But, everyone we met was kind and courteous and there to enjoy a good burger, just like us.
All in all, we had a blast on this trip to nationals. Casey and Moonshine, Illinois were great previews before hitting the amazing city of Indianapolis.
We made the most of everything while on this road trip, had lots of laughs, and became closer friends. We hope you love our story about our adventures in small towns!
