Recently, we worked on a story on the topic of teens cutting themselves short when it comes to hours of rest.
Spoiler alert: teens don’t get enough sleep.
When we chose the topic, we were really interested to learn about the health risks and long-term effects that lack of sleep can cause. Considering we are teenagers who face this problem, we were a little taken back at how much going to bed late and waking up early effects each person. Mood, metabolism, attention span, and more all play into shortened nights of sleep.
We began to set up our interviews with professionals in the medical field, students in our school that struggle with busy schedules and simply not enough time in the day, and teachers who witness such behavior everyday. One of our school nurses, Molly Lynchard, was eager to help and we were thankful for her interview. Jaden then reached out to a friend who loves going to bed late and balances it out with caffeine. Our last interviewee was Mrs. Flynn who has a wide variety of students throughout the day, ranging from freshman to seniors.
We ending up capturing all of the interviews on the same day. We found ourselves in a bit of a time crunch as due dates crept up quickly. We were able to get the needed interviews and finish our paperwork as we began editing in the backroom.
Going into the story, we were nervous about b-roll. A story about sleep just seemed like something that would be difficult to portray through video. We ended up tying energy drinks and caffeine into a big part of our story, so we were able to get a lot of classroom shots and lunch room shots with people chugging caffeine.
We were able to finish the story and produce an informative piece that will hopefully open more people’s eyes when it comes to ditching sleep and loading up on sugary caffeinated drinks.
Thank you for reading, and we hope you enjoy our story!
