What is Your Digital Footprint?
by Austin, Tess, and Autumn
In this story, we were very intrigued to see what students of WHS knew about their digital footprint. From what we gathered, it wasn’t too much. So, we did our research and got the story.
We first asked students if they knew what their digital footprint was. They all responded with the same not-too-sure response.
Realizing students didn't know much about their footprint, we decided to interview Mrs. Kelly Richard in the Guidance Department. She explained what a digital footprint is and really went in depth about how to keep your digital footprint clean for school and employment prospects.
Then, we decided to interview Officer Doug Tollison. He is our School Resource Officer with the Washington Police Department. He told us about what he does to help students with their digital footprint and also spoke about why students need to watch their digital footprint in the eyes of the law.
After that, we filmed b-roll to add more depth to our story. We got clips of teens on their phones and computers looking through social media to portray how student’s digital footprint can be seen by any audience at any time. We also filmed college acceptance letters.
The whole process wasn't perfect. We had some issues. We got a late start and our staff was hit with the flu bug, so the rest of us had to step so we could complete the story. We were able to get it finished quickly, especially when people felt better!
We really hope you enjoy the story. It is one that everyone can relate to. It's important that the issue is addressed because of its prevalence in our school and in society.
