As a high school student trying to balance school work, sports, extracurricular activities, and a social life, it can be difficult to add a job to this mess. It is important to me to have a source of income and not have to rely on my parents for everything.
I began to brainstorm ways that I could make some cash without being committed to a strict schedule. My dilemma with getting a job is that I would not have time to work more than a day a week and that day would be on Saturdays. Saturdays are my only “free” day of the week, aside from practice and other activities. I would prefer to spend that day doing “me” things.
This left me with one serious question: How could I find a way to make money on my own schedule and time? The answer was pretty sweet!
I have been making homemade chocolate chip cookies for my family for years. They don’t like them any other way. I actually enjoy making them and I can do it whenever I want to. This is what sparked my idea of selling them. I made a batch of cookies and put it on my social media just to see if it was possible to make money off of them. The whole batch sold within 20 minutes and I made $50.
At first, my target group was high school students, but I soon realized that high school students don’t have $5 to spend on cookies. Therefore, I started asking my parents’ friends, work partners, and neighbors if they were interested in buying them.
Some people made fun of me for making money by baking cookies. However, I make more money in the hour of making a batch than they might make in a whole day. In addition to that, it is fun! Sometimes I get my family to help me so we can have more bonding time.
Honestly, if you are like me and need a flexible work schedule, I would say quit your minimum wage job! You could start a cookie business! However, now that I am thinking it all the way through, I think you should keep that minimum wage job because I need the customers. All jokes aside, if you can make money doing something you love, then go for it!
