Bullet Journals Gain Popularity
I was a little nervous when it was my turn to produce a backpack story, but I was also very excited to have the opportunity to create something entirely on my own.
There was no limit when it came to story topic ideas. I wanted to choose something that was fun and unique. After a lot of thought and input from my classmates, I decided on the topic of bullet journaling. This topic was one that I believed to be relatively new and fresh for the audience, but also a big enough trend on social media to still be relevant. I also thought this story could serve as a document of this present trend for people from my generation to look back on.
It wasn’t hard to find students who had already taken up the craze. I knew of several prior to filming this story, all willing to be interviewed. Each subject provided great information and soundbites, which made the script easy to write.
I wanted to explain what bullet journaling was and how the students tailor their journals to fit their unique lifestyles. I also wanted to show the benefits of this activity, and then offer advice to anyone considering it. My interviews gave me all the information I was looking for.
For the audience to truly understand what bullet journaling is, I knew I had to get a lot of b-roll, so I made sure to get footage of the journals as the girls explained what they had done on the inside. I also met with Mikayla Reed and recorded the creative process as she filled out one of her pages. I didn’t really have to search for interesting shots or angles because the journals themselves were interesting enough.
After I got the b-roll, everything came together quickly and the story was brought to life. I am happy with how it turned out! This was a fun topic to cover, and I hope that it inspires some creativity in you as it did me!
