Takes a Leap of Faith
by Emma, Colleen, and Autumn
When we looked at story ideas, one of our options was to cover a ‘call to ministry.’ We immediately thought of Carlie Harrison. We knew a little about her mission trip experience, but we had no idea what a story she had to tell.
Carlie was thrilled to do the interview, and her outgoing personality made it very easy to lose track of time. We had all of our questions planned out. On the first one, she poured out her heart, sharing so many amazing stories. Our interview turned into a conversation of us just wanting to learn more about Carlie's mission work. She gave us a lot of great information and soundbites to start off with. We ended up leaving the interview with over 15 minutes of footage.
When we started slating the footage and writing the script, it became very difficult to decide which parts of the interview to use in order to convey our message. Her story had such a big impact on us, and we had less than two minutes to fully capture it for our audience.
To utilize our time, we focused mainly on displaying Carlie’s personality, her faith, and the impact this trip had on her. We really wanted our audience to get to know her and make a connection.
Once we finished the script and started editing, everything started coming together. Carlie captured some great memories on her mission trip that we were able to use as our b-roll. There were so many snapshots, it was a challenge to choose which ones to insert into our story. We had to find the ones that correlated with the narration best. It was her pictures and videos that tied the whole story together and allowed the audience to feel like they were a part of the experience. The b-roll tells a story all on its own.
Overall, we are very happy with how the story came together. We feel that it flows well and that the b-roll illustrated her experience perfectly. Carlie’s faith, passion for God, and selflessness towards others left us inspired. It is our hope that this leaves the same impact on our audience.
