Culinary Arts Hospitality Room
by Allison Meyer and Cierstyn Jacquin
When we were brainstorming story ideas, the theme of “rising to the challenge” was an option. We liked that quote, so we looked around our school for a story that fit the theme. Soon, we realized Culinary Arts was a prime example of a group that rises to the challenge! We dove headfirst into what the class is as a whole, who all is involved, and what it takes to get through Mrs. Karen Fixsal’s Culinary Arts program.
We started by talking to Karen Fixsal, the Culinary Arts instructor, to get a feel for the class. One aspect that really stood out was the work this group does for the Hospitality Room. After we finalized that we wanted to produce this story, we started creating our list of questions and scheduling interviews for Mrs. Fixsal and WHS Activities Director, Bill Deckelman.
After we completed their interviews, the next day we interviewed two students Mrs. Fixsal recommended; Mason Kimminau and Nicole Luko.
Once all the interviews were done, we slated and logged all the interviews in one class period and made an outline for our story. The next two days we laid out our script and got it approved with ease.
At this point, we realized we had a really good story on our hands. It was informational and showed people a side of WHS that they may not know about.
When it was time to edit the segment, we were pretty excited to see it come together. With the B-roll we got from the hospitality room, pictures of the Culinary Arts students, and the interviews, our story quickly developed. After a day of final touches in the editing bay, we called the story done!
The two of us had a lot of fun producing this story packet. We even got it done ahead of time and were able to shed light on a small program in our school many students don’t know about.
