Elijah McLeans is Back
by Megan, Emma D, and Claire
We really wanted to produce a story on Elijah McLeans because it was a mystery to us. We all wanted to learn more about it and answer all of the questions that anyone may have about this piece of Washington's history.
Our idea was to interview a manager at Elijah’s, but unfortunately, we could not get the interview due to her not wanting to be on camera. When then decided to take a new approach to the story and talk about the customer's point of view. We were able to get interviews with two customers that have dined there and one interview with a WHS alumni who had the first wedding at Elijah McLeans since they reopened.
All of the customers interviews went really well! We got a lot of intel about the food and their overall experience at the new restaurant. With Jesse, we were able to get a really good interview about her wedding held there and all that was included like the food.
We were also able to get an interview with Marc Houseman from the Historical Society, he gave us lots of good information. Even though we didn't include it in the story, he even told us stories about Elijah's being haunted. His interview went on for over forty minutes, and we got really good b-roll along with the interview.
After we got all of the interviews, we began to slate and log them together. We did run into a problem with Marc’s interview and some of it not being audible. While that was a let down, we were able to work around the challenge and find some good soundbites to use in our story.
We were able to write a script easily because we knew our angle and had lots of great interviews. We started writing the script, powered through, and ended up with a great sounding script.
The editing process went quite well for us all being new on staff and editing by ourselves. We had a lot of great b-roll of Jesse’s wedding, and all of the shots we took at Elijah's.
The story came together really well and we are very happy with the result. While producing this story we had some setbacks and challenges, but we were able to overcome them and produce a story that we hope you enjoy.
