End the "R" Word
by Emmy, Molly E, and Faith
We chose to work on a story that we felt was long overdue. When we chose to tell this story, we wanted to aim for our viewers' hearts. We, as a team, felt this story was going to have an effect on people, and hopefully to change their perspectives about the use of the "R" word.
Kevin and Aubree Kitchell's story is one we will not forget. The experience was emotional and very inspiring. Kevin has down syndrome, and he moved us tremendously. He is one of the happiest and most loving people. He has so much talent. The Kitchell family must be proud to have someone like Kevin in their lives.
While interviewing and gathering B-Roll for our story, it was somewhat tricky to get the right shot sequence and right idea for what we were aiming for. Kevin took the time to show us all around his home and provided many details about his life. Aubree was very accommodating, too. We even had the chance to go to the YMCA to play a little basketball. These two were unbelievably great to work with.
Later on in the week, we got started editing. We had some trouble meshing all the B-roll together along with our sound bites, but MT (our adviser) was right there willing to help show us the way!
Overall, this was very moving for our team. Kevin is truly inspiring and this was a very enlightening experience for all of us.
