I am writing to thank our service members who have served and those who are currently serving our country today. These heroes deserve so much respect and love. I cannot imagine what they’ve been through, or what they’ve seen.
July 4, 1776. Our country declared its independence from Great Britain. Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration and signed it along with 55 other delegates. The declaration talks about how we are a free country and how we have the right to be. “We hold these truths to be self-evident. That all men are created equal.” Our veterans fought for many years to protect our rights.
June 6, 1944. United States forces landed on Normandy beach. Loaded in boat transports, these men faced high winds and waters to get to their destination. Their destination was once a beautiful beach. Now, it was nowhere near it. Instead of seashells and beach chairs, this beach was covered in barbed wire, and at the top of the hill, it was loaded with German bunkers filled with dozens of German machine guns. Most men were sitting ducks, but the survivors pushed on and eventually took the beach. This became a turning point in the war. A war that freed men, and stopped a tyrant.
January 1973. Our service members came home from Vietnam. They came home from the communist war that they were chosen to fight. They did what their country asked of them, right? Yes, they did. When they came home, they were ridiculed, treated like dirt and given no respect, only because people had different opinions about the government at that time. Americans didn’t want war, but that wasn’t the soldiers' fault. They only did their duty and did what their country had asked.
Fast forward to today and all I can say is thank you to all of our service members. Thank you for your dedication, hard work, and integrity. Thank you to those who didn’t make it back home, and all the ones in between. These people made our country free. The least we can do is give them the respect that they deserve.
