Finsta Fad Hits WHS
by Sarah, Claire, and Colton
Not everyone knows what a finsta is, while some people do. Some teens have their own finsta, while others follow or even hate on those that have one.
We chose produce a story on the finsta fad to explain the purpose, benefits, and possible consequences of having a finsta.
At first, we struggled with where to start the story and who to interview. Some teens might be embarrassed or hesitant to admit that they have a finsta because it is a very private account. We started off by randomly pulling kids from class to conduct impromptu interviews.
The first person we interviewed was Drew Post. We were lucky that he has his own finsta and did not mind showing it off or talking about it. We were able to get some good b-roll of the posts he has made. He provided insight into the reasoning for having a finsta. After Drew, we interviewed Nick Corley, Levi Weber, and Abbie Vollmer who all gave their own personal opinions on what it is like to follow finstas.
Next, we interviewed our school’s resource officer, Greg Garrett. He commented on his personal choice to keep his opinion off of social media as well as the legal side of having a fake profile. He states that finstas are a first amendment right but warns against online harassment. It's the "how" they are used that can get a person in trouble.
After conducting the interviews, slating and logging our footage, and writing our script, we were tasked with gathering b-roll. We found it difficult to get examples of finstas since they are often very personal posts. We decided to get people reacting to posts on social media as well as a few examples of what a typical finsta post may look like.
Once we edited our story and added in b-roll, we decided it just wasn’t enough. The story was a little short, so we went back through and added more footage from our interviews and even more b-roll to give it a little more "punch" or "depth" for our viewers.
Overall, our story ended up coming together nicely. Despite any issues we had, in the end, it came together. We enjoyed doing the impromptu interviews and listening to peoples' thoughts on the finsta fad.
Ultimately, we hope our viewers of all ages learn from this story and come to their own conclusions about finsta accounts.
