Health is Priceless
by Faith, Emma, Haley and Jared
This story was a difficult one, due to the fact it is a Missouri Interscholastic Press Association Journalism Challenge story. Our team was given a theme to cover in only two weeks.
Our topic was "the high costs of health care." When it came to finding our angle, we struggled. We were originally going to tell a story from the perspective of an EMT, but it was extremely difficult to interview one due to the fact that they are on call 24/7.
Eventually, we found a person who had experienced a near-death experience with a UTV. She and her family had to experience the extremely high costs of health care.
Sarah Hoemann, a sophomore at WHS, suffered multiple injuries to her face and body after the steering wheel on a UTV came off, causing her to wreck. She had to be transported to St. Louis Children's Hospital by helicopter. Although they were all extremely grateful Sarah was immediately helped, the medical costs were through the roof.
We feel that our story turned out wonderful in the end. However, we did have some technical problems. Our camera died during Mrs. Hoemann's interview. Luckily, we had a charger on hand and were able to plug it in and continue where we left off. B-roll was difficult to get, considering we were limited to photos and generic footage of Sarah at home. This delayed our editing progress.
We were also having problems making our story flow in the beginning, and we were worried we wouldn't meet our deadline. However, we made it work, and we are all very pleased with the way it turned out. We hope you will be too, enjoy!
