by Emma and Autumn
When we got the chance to look at the new story topics for this round, we were immediately intrigued by the idea of doing a story about a topic not everyone knows much about: homeschooling.
Shiloh Risley was homeschooled. She knows Emma from Young Life, so we thought she and her family would be perfect to focus this story on.
We drove to the Risley’s home during school one day, and we were excited the entire ride there. We knew this would be a great story before we even started. Our script for this topic wasn’t due for a few weeks, but we wanted to get a head start.
We had some questions that were fairly self-explanatory to ask the Risley’s, but came up with some on the fly. The interviews of Shiloh and her mother, Hope, turned out better than we had hoped. All of the kids were home that day and it was fun getting to know them!
After interviewing, it was finally time to start script writing. Everything flowed together extremely well, and we had tons of b-roll to use in the editing process. It went smoothly, just like we had hoped.
Then came editing. The story turned out to be a little longer than a typical BJJTV feature story, but we thought it was necessary to tell the full story. We feel we couldn’t have done it in only a minute and a half.
The b-roll we had matched up perfectly to what the interviewees were saying, which made the story look even more refined.
All in all, we loved covering this story topic. The Risley family was kind enough to let us in their home and meet their family, and we are so grateful for that. We enjoyed making this story and we hope you learn more about how homeschooling works!
