Homebound Doesn't Mean
No Fun or Creativity
Coronavirus came into our lives and has taken away the normalcy and things we had planned by forcing everyone who could go into quarantine. I’m on day 37 of my quarantine. During all this time, I have been able to make a list of things that have become part of my everyday life here in my home!
FaceTime/texting friends- Keeping in contact with the friends you can no longer see everyday is such a good way to keep your sanity through this. Don’t let these friendships die! Show them you care!
Cleaning- We all know that one corner of your room or even your closet that just becomes the place where random items go to hide. Seems as though there is a lot of time on your hands, so why not get that off your plate? Trash things that can go, and maybe even get a donation pile going for when all this blows over!
Decorate your room- If you and your family are like mine, you are constantly ready to move anything to improve the space, style, and comfort of your home. So, if you can, consider switching rooms with a sibling or even your parents! Then, you can completely redecorate your room. Yes, I have already done it, and I have so many more ideas about what to do with the walls of my new room.
Painting- I absolutely love people who paint and make their own art. It’s been a goal of mine for a while, so I figured, why not try it out? I didn’t really know how to get started, and I didn’t have the money or time to go to a crafts store to buy all the starter supplies before COVID-19 caught up to Washington. So, after a little research, I came across something called a Paint By Number. I ordered it off of Amazon for a really good price! It comes with all the paint you’ll need, the canvas, and paintbrushes. It takes a lot of time, but it is so much fun and so calming! 10/10 would recommend it to a friend.
something you really enjoy with your loved ones!
I think it’s important to still enjoy your time and to work on yourself through this COVID-19 experience. Stay home for those who can’t, and be there for those you love. We’re all in this together, Blue Jays. I hope you try some new things with your free time!
Swiftie for Life:
Growing Up With Taylor Swift
My taste in music has gone from whatever was on the radio, to diving deep into Spotify looking for music that really fits my mood and what I’m doing. When I was younger, I listened to Maroon 5, P!nk, Lady Gaga, and Taylor Swift and now I listen to Rex Orange County, Tyler the Creator, Harry Styles, and Taylor Swift.
Notice how Taylor Swift has always been a current singer? She fit into both my younger and my current music lists! Why? Well, she moves with her audience and that’s how she has stayed relevant for 15+ years.
I’m proud to say the only two concerts I have been to in my life are Taylor Swift concerts; the Speak Now tour in 2012 and in 2018 the Reputation Tour. I don’t remember much from the Speak Now tour, but the Reputation tour will be in my mind forever.
Though her concerts are amazing, that is not what I want to focus on right now. Instead, I want to express why Taylor has been an important part of mine and many other people's lives. I have so many reasons to love Taylor Swift such as her style, her music, her cats, and her political views. Now I’m not gonna sit here and tell you what to believe, but I have so much respect for her and how, after years of being told to be quiet about these things, she finally stepped up.
An example of her showing her political views was when she started releasing songs for her Lover album. She released a song called You Need to Calm Down. This song is basically saying we should love people for being themselves, mainly focusing on the LGBTQ community. The music video shows many LGBTQ icons such as the cast of the Netflix series Queer Eye, Ellen, RuPaul, and one of her best friend's Todrick Hall.
The Video is so colorful and vibrant, and at the very end she put up her link to her petition which was to support the Equality Act. As a result, she won Video of the Year at the 2019 MTV Video Music Awards for that music video.
When she went up to receive the award she said, “In this video several points were made, so you voting for this video means you want a world where we’re all treated equally under the law. Regardless of who we love, regardless of how we identify. At the end of this video there was a petition, and there still is a petition for the Equality Act, which basically just says we all deserve equal rights under the law.”
Everything she has done for the Equality Act could be seen as an inspiration to anyone.
There are so many reasons to love Taylor Swift and so many other instances where she stood her ground and stayed true to herself. I think that she is the type of celebrity that parents would want their children to grow up admiring, just like I did (and still do).
Born This Way Foundation:
Making a Difference and Changing Lives for the Better
Back in 2012, Lady Gaga and her mother founded a campaign called Born This Way Foundation. The main goal of this foundation is creating a kinder and braver world.
This idea in itself is a wonderful thing. I believe that everyone should work to better themselves, but the program digs even deeper into how to make the entire world better. The foundation has mainly been focusing on mental health. They teach teens how to see the signs mental illness and how to help those struggling with such issues. Mental health is one of the biggest issues happening in our generation. It’s so important that an icon such as Lady Gaga is using her platform to promote helping one another.
On a personal note, my mom has always been inspired by Lady Gaga and I never gave much thought as to why. When her song A Million Reasons came out, my mom wouldn’t stop listening to it, so I asked her why she loved Lady Gaga so much. She explained to me all the good she does and how big her heart is. So, I started doing more research on her and what I found made me fall in love with her like my mom did. Her personality radiates pure acceptance and love, while also preaching individuality.
I think Lady Gaga is truly making a difference. She has recognized that she has a huge following and a platform, so she is doing the best things possible with it. This foundation continues to grow within schools and with her fans. I hope this blog post helps you see the good that is being done and maybe even you can spread the love.
My Personal Style
My sense of style has never settled on one thing. When trends go around, I tend to pick up a few things from them, but never really change my style. An example of this is the VSCO girl epidemic. I added a few things to my style, such as scrunchies and friendship bracelets, but I don’t think these things have changed my normal style. I just have more bracelets now!
We’re not here to talk about trends though, we’re here to talk about whatever you want to call my style. I guess you could say my style is a little grunge considering the fact that I only wear dark colors, but I do this because I like my accessories to really pop.
One of my main accessories are my socks. I’ll wear a navy blue t-shirt, black ripped jeans, knock-off Birkenstocks, and cat socks. Yes, you read that right. I wear socks and sandals in unison basically everyday.
Other accessories that I like to add on are the before-mentioned friendship bracelets, poppin' nail color, and sometimes some big earrings. In fact, now that I think about it, I just took off my slime green colored nails the other day.
My friends say that my style is not having a style. I guess that description is what I’m gonna roll with. My style will probably change again next week, but at least I'll enjoy my weird socks right now.
Inspiration From the Big Screen
Many people don’t take movies seriously. It’s even harder to take a movie seriously when it's focused on superheroes who use powers to defeat a bad guy who is threatening the fate of humanity. Often, these films are just viewed as an escape from reality, not a life lesson.
Even though I don’t necessarily take these movies as seriously as the news, I do tend to look up to the characters in these stories. In Captain America, one character really stood out to me. This character was named Peggy Carter. Peggy was a high-ranking agent for S.H.I.E.L.D. She helped train soldiers during a time when women typically did not have such important jobs.
Peggy always knew her value and fought to protect what she believed in. Because of her attitude and self worth, I instantly fell in love with everything she had to say on screen. However, there is one quote in particular that stood out to me.
“Even if the whole world is telling you to move, it is your duty to plant yourself like a tree, look them in the eye, and say 'no, you move.'”
Ever since I’ve watched this movie in 2016, I’ve been trying to live by these words. Even though I feel like I’m still learning my value, it’s nice to remember that I am still worth everything I work for, and that I still have so much waiting for me. This is my favorite quote because it reminds me that no one can change who I am, what I am capable of, and I’m good enough to fight for what I want.
Jimi Hendrix = PURRfection!
When I was asked to name only one thing I can’t live without, I looked around my room. First, I saw Parks and Recreation playing and thought, “it’s definitely up there on the list.” Then I saw my cup of hot tea in my favorite Spider-Man mug and thought, “that’s also pretty life or death.”
While still glancing around my room, I heard the movement of boxes that I emptied earlier. Upon further investigation, I saw my nine-year-old cat, Jimi Hendrix, lying down inside a box looking up at me with his big innocent eyes. This was the moment I realized that of course my cat is much more important to me than a favorite show or a coffee cup!
Jimi and I go way back to elementary school days when we were living in a rough neighborhood. We’ve moved twice since then and through all the moving he’s been by my side, ready for any new adventure. On our most recent move, which was only a few weeks ago, I was taking Jimi to our new house and it hit me that no matter where Jimi goes, he’ll do fine as long as I’m with him. That might sound weird or big-headed of me to say, but Jimi and I share a very close bond. Unlike all the other pets in the house who would prefer my mom over me, Jimi is my pet.
Since he’s been with us for so long, he’s heard some rants out of me. From me complaining about my parents being unfair and my break ups, to listening to me practice for a presentation I was nervous about for school, Jimi is always there! Though he never says anything helpful or constructive back, he’s been there to comfort me through any and every rough patch.
I’m watching him grow old now and it’s hard to imagine a life without him. I’ll be there to comfort him for many years to come just as he has done for me. He is my best friend and I love him with all my heart. This is why he is the one thing I cannot live without.
