Guys, what's going on? At the time of writing this, your record is 47-49. I can't remember a time in my life where you guys where this far in the season and still below .500. Just a couple years ago you all won 100 games!
Now, everytime I turn on the game, it seems like you guys blow it in the last few innings due to bad pitching, errors, or just plain lack of fundamentals. Just yesterday you guys lost to the Mets because Trevor Rosenthal, in classic Trevor Rosenthal fashion, walked the leadoff batter, who eventually got to third base with two outs when a grounder was hit to Matt Carpenter at first.
Because Carpenter was playing so deep in the infield, he couldn't get to first base in time to get the final out and send the game into extra innings and was relying on Rosenthal to cover first base. The only problem was that Rosenthal, in his own words, was "watching the play" and allowed the batter to reach the base safely and score the runner at third.
The ending to that game is an ending that is all too familiar to Cardinals fans like myself this season.
Let me clarify, you guys are by no means bad, but I know you are better than this. Your batting average, runs, ERA, and strikeouts are all ranked in the middle of the league, but where you can really see statistical proof of the choking I described is in the errors and opponents runs allowed in the last two innings. You rank 8th in errors committed throughout all of the teams in the MLB and 25th in opponents runs allowed.
Beyond that, I can't really find a reason for the sub par season. Like I said, maybe I am just a spoiled fan. After all, most of the statistics I found painted a picture of a mediocre team with a mediocre record, which if you rank all 30 of the teams in the league by record you guys are right in the middle at 15.
Maybe this is just me being used to success from you guys. You've made the playoffs 6 times of the last 8 years and have been to the National League Championship 4 of those times!
You guys need to fix whatever is going on. Come on guys, I know you are better than this.
Luckily, there are still two whole months left to play and you are only back three and a half games in the division. So while this might be a down year so far, you are by no means out of it.
Even though I am pretty critical right now, I still believe in you and hope you guys bring home another World Series trophy.
Your loyal fan,
