Make a Wish: Lazlo to Legoland
I’ve been looking forward to my backpack story all year. It’s the one time per school year where we have complete control over our story, from choosing the story topic down to the background music. That is because it is the story we do all by ourselves, without other staff members helping us.
I knew that since this is my senior year that this would be my last backpack story. I really wanted to make it count and cover something that would reach for our viewers' hearts. I had a couple of ideas bouncing around, but when it came down to it, I knew the story I wanted to tell.
I’ve had the lucky opportunity of being friends with Emmy Hopkins and Jessica Frick. Just knowing how selfless, giving, and how great they are is a beautiful thing. I felt that their story was one that needed to be told.
Emmy and Jessica are both DECA students at WHS. They decided to dedicate their state DECA project to teaming up with Make-A-Wish in efforts to send a little boy, Lazlo, to Legoland California. Not only did they surpass their goal by over $3,000, but they also put a lot of hard work into the process of raising that much money.
I decided to interview the girls at school. We set up outside of the DECA classroom. Both interviews went better than I could have ever imagined. The dedication really shined as the girls’ faces lit up while talking about their journey to helping Lazlo. I was able to write the script during a single class period because the interviews laid out so well together. Once I got approved to edit, I had ideas flowing and I felt prepared.
While the editing process can be tedious, I really enjoyed laying out b-roll and figuring out fun ways to keep the story interesting. Pictures and video footage really helped smooth out the bumps and connect everything. Once I reached a point where I was satisfied, my adviser, MT weighed in and we polished it off.
I am so happy with how this story turned out. Being given such a privilege to tell such a great, wholesome story feels like a great way to top off my last year in BJJTV.
