Missouri Legalizes Medical Marijuana
by Brennan Randolph
As my second year on staff, I assumed that my back pack story for the school year would have gone a lot smoother than my first. Boy, was I wrong. This story had a very rocky and rough start.
My first choice on my story topic was to cover an organization known as, TOKE (Triumph Over Kids Cancer). I quickly realized that this topic wasn’t something that I felt I could cover. From there, I decided to take a bite bigger than I could chew by covering the legalization of Medical Marijuana in Missouri. Not just the pros or the cons, but all sides of the topic.
As deadlines grew closer, I was falling extremely behind. I asked Ms. Turner something unheard of in Blue Jay Journal TV. I wanted permission to change my topic for a third time. In the end, I’m glad she had told me no.
Ms. Turner recognized my struggle to find interviewees and sources of b-roll. My story wouldn’t have been possible without her turning to social media for help. She uploaded a post to her personal Facebook page stating that BJJTV was looking for people who could speak on this topic. She quickly had five people respond. She also connected me with local resources within our own school district. I ended up with three strong interviews.
After my interviews, I started to write my script. Writing my script was quite simple for me. I used all of my paper work to help me get a perfect lay out. But when it came to writing the reporter's lines I struggled. I reached out to a classmate, Kathryn Freitag, for help. When I got everything in place, I had Ms. Turner approve the script. She ended up making a few minor tweaks, and then she got me set up to edit.
I began with laying out my interviews, then putting in my stand-ups. After I checked all audio and timing, b-roll was the next challenge. Ms. Turner sat with me and helped me pull head lines, photos, commercial clips, and statistics. When we got everything together, it just seemed that my story was lacking its full potential. So, I went to a friend's house and got more footage of CBD oil to make the story a bit more visually interesting. I believe the story really benefited from having less still images.
Now that this story is finished, I can easily say that while this story is factual and gets the point across, it isn't the strongest story I have ever produced. I’m still proud of my finished product and I hope viewers can learn more about Medical Marijuana Missouri.
