What are the qualities that make up a good room?
An interior designer may see those qualities, take one glance at my classroom, and immediately want to grab a sledgehammer. Me? Not so much. Believe it or not, one of my favorite rooms in the world is my classroom at WHS. What was once Room 30 has become Room 1311, thanks to a new numbering system. The new system didn't really make sense to me until I walked the school to help my daughter find her classes since she's starting high school this year (which is another blog post in itself). Sure, the technology has changed, and the shelves may not house a ton of English textbooks these days, but over the past 20+ years, this has been my home away from home. And, I want to point out, it's not just MY home away from home, but many students have found it to be a comfortable spot to come in and read quietly, edit video, or just "be still" during their mornings, lunch breaks, or after school. This room that's often cold and has tons of windows to nowhere is colorful, crammed with awards and photos, and holds so many great memories. Again, not just my memories, but memories that so many former students can look back on and smile when they reminisce. This room is where couples have met who are now happily married (to each other) functioning adults. It's where people who never talked before became best friends. This space has held frustrations, fears, hopes, dreams, and laughter - quite a bit of it! So, the next time you think about the qualities that make a room a good space, maybe you can add these traits to the list:
And, last but not least, the ability to wear a hoodie or jacket pretty much year-round. Brrrrrr... ~ MT |
