You'll Never Know Until You Try

12/11/2021

I consider myself to be a creative person, however, I have a lack of motivation. I have ideas to make and edit videos, something that I love to do, but I don’t do it because I’m too afraid they will turn out badly. The fear of disappointing myself and others is too powerful, and it holds me back from doing almost everything in my life.

However, there are some times when I don’t feel this way. There is a song by Billie Eilish called “come out and play” in which she urges the listener to do what they are afraid of and to keep trying. This may be cheesy, but it’s encouraging words from songs like this that inspire me to pursue those projects that I want to do. One of the lyrics in the song is “I know it makes you nervous, but I promise you, it’s worth it, to show ‘em everything you kept inside. Don’t hide.” It’s these types of messages that help me push past those negative thoughts.

Every time I listen to this song, I feel understood. I feel heard. It helps me to refocus back on whatever tasks lie ahead of me. It actually inspired me to write this blog. I was sitting in my room playing music and attempting to write, but I kept stopping because I hated the topics I chose. They were too personal, and I kept holding back from what I was writing. Then this song started playing, it reminded me of my potential, not only for this blog post but everything that I typically cower away from.

Another one of the lines in the song is “you see a piece of paper, could be a little greater, show me what you could make her, you’ll never know until you try it.” The meaning of the lyrics is obvious. If you see potential in something, you should just go for it because you will never know the outcome unless you give it a try.

The messages in this song are ones that I often forget, but I want to try and remember and think of them more. I hope you can do this, too. If there is something you want to pursue, give it a try, you may find that the outcome is better than you expected. Don’t hide.

An Open Letter to the Role Model I Didn't Know I Needed

Dear Megan Duncan,

If it wasn’t for you, I wouldn’t have had anyone to sit with at lunch my freshman and sophomore years, but you were more than a person to eat lunch with! Although I only went to school with you for two years, you have had such a huge and positive impact on my high school career. You were an amazing teammate on the dance team, you introduced me to BJJTV, and you were just unapologetically you.

When I joined the dance team, I was extremely intimidated by the upperclassmen. I was shy and scared to talk to any of them, but you and Gabby Henzel made me feel like I belonged. You both gave me rides and made an effort to talk to me at practice. Now, I am a senior on the dance team and I am doing what I can to be that same kind person to the underclassmen.

And, then there is BJJTV. I had an interest in joining the class since middle school, but because you talked to me about your experience in the class, you were the final factor in my decision to apply. I love the class and now want to work in film production. This means you were a key factor in finding out what I want to do in life!

BJJTV is one of the places that I felt most comfortable in school. It is a place that helps me learn to deal with social situations and speaking to new people. I know being an introvert is something that both of us struggle with, but this class has really been a big help with me overcoming some of my fears as an introvert.

Also, being an introvert means that we can both be pretty shy and not very outgoing, but from the time I met you when you were just a Junior, to now, you have flourished. You now live in CALIFORNIA! (Which is something I always knew you could do, by the way.) Moving across the country is a huge decision. It is something that not many people have the guts to do for college.

I want to move to Milwaukee for school. It is something I am beyond excited about, but I am also pretty fearful. However, once you told me that you would be going to USC, I realized I would be fine. You have set an example of how it is okay to go outside of your comfort zone, and how you can’t do anything unless you try.

I also wanna talk a little bit about your style. It is top notch. Amazing. Your style is another example of how you have overcome being reserved. Even though you aren’t always an outgoing person 24-7, your style definitely is. You always dress how you want to dress, and it is always flawless.

Thank you for being the role model I didn’t know I needed.
