LGBT Students Seek Acceptance
by Molly L and Jared
“Is WHS accepting of LGBT students?” We decided to find the answer to this question. We knew we wanted to approach this subject with empathy and kindness, while being fair in our reporting.
We found out about Blue Jay Alliance, a club at WHS that unites and supports LGBT students, as well as straight students who want to show their support of the LGBT community.
We decided to interview some students in the club and their sponsor to see if they felt accepted at school. The students we interviewed gave us their perspectives on being part of the LGBT community at Washington High School. Most of the accounts we received were positive, while we did hear about some negative aspects.
After collecting all of our interviews, we carefully wrote the script. After we had our script approved, it was time to start editing.
The editing process was going very smoothly until we ran into one problem: B-roll. Unfortunately, Blue Jay Alliance only holds meetings every few weeks, so we had to wait a week and a half to capture the B-roll we needed at a meeting. Once we had the B-roll of the meeting, we thought we were set. But, unfortunately we ran into another problem: the memory card we shot the B-roll on mysteriously went missing. We had to improvise with the footage we could find, as well as use footage we had from the Day of Silence.
We think the story came together very nicely, although the B-roll wasn’t exactly what we imagined. We hope we served the topic well and brought awareness to a group at our school making a positive difference in students’ lives.
