Students of Various Faiths
by Matthew, Megan, Claire, and Sarah
We thought that producing a story over different religions would be really interesting. We started off by thinking of people that we knew that practiced religions other than Christianity.
Right off the bat, we knew some people who were Mormon. We immediately interviewed both Madilynn Kipp and Clementine Hamai.
We wanted to feature more than just one religion, so we kept trying to think of people who practiced some unique religions. Claire suggested that we interview Jolie Newman because she is Jewish. Her interview provided a lot of great insight into being Jewish in a predominately Christian town.
Finally, Megan said she remembered a student in her 7th grade health class that was a Jehovah's Witness. Luckily, he was still going to school in Washington, so we were able to interview him. Overall, we were really happy with the interviews we conducted.
When we were laying out the script, we didn’t have too much of a problem finding good soundbites because we had four great interviews to pick from. We did struggle a little bit with connecting the different topics through voice overs, but we were able to work through it.
Even though we had plenty of interview footage, we knew early on that B-roll was going to be hard to get. We filmed what we could and worked with what we had in order to make the story come together.
We all learned a lot from the students that we interviewed and we hope you do, too. Even though our town is mainly mainstream Christian, there are people who practice other faiths. Being more open-minded to that is a win-win for people in our school and community.
