Teens Contribute to Missourian Book Blog
by Megan Duncan
I was interested in doing my first backpack (solo story) about Katrina and Samantha's Missourian book blogs because I also love reading. I thought that I could ask awesome questions and really go in depth on the topic since I can relate to it.
I started by attending an Missourian Book Blog meeting at our local book store Neighborhood Reads. While there, I got some b-roll of Katrina and Samantha talking about some books that they have read and reviewed. I also got some shots of books and various displays to use in my story.
While at the meeting, I was able to interview Chris, the Missourian book editor. She gave an awesome interview filled with information on how the bloggers writing has improved and just an overview of all the work they have done. I knew Immediately I would be able to use several soundbites.
Then I interviewed Katrina and Samantha at school. They both talked a lot about what inspires them to read and why they love it. I knew this would be great for the story. While interviewing Katrina, she mentioned our school librarian Mrs. Loesing. I knew that a fourth interview would help my story, so that same day I scheduled an interview with her.
Mrs. Loesing's interview went great. She spoke about the role the girls play in the library and how proud she was of them. Also, that day I got a bunch of still shots of the library and of books to use as b-roll.
Next, I started slating and logging. It took me a while since all of my interviews ended up being over 6 minutes. Slating and logging is how I decide what soundbites will go into the story. Then, I did back time as I wrote my script, which all went pretty smoothly.
The last step was editing my story. I was very nervous about this at first, but overall, I think it went well. I actually surprised myself with how much I had picked up by watching older staff members edit videos on Final Cut.
After watching the finished product, I am very happy with how the story turned out. I think it shines light on Katrina and Samantha’s accomplishments and is interesting to watch. I hope everyone else will enjoy it, too.
