Today's Teens Face Social Media Overload
by Colton Souders and Zach Batson
Before we even started, we read an article about the subject, just to get a better understanding of what too much social media does to a teen. Right away, Colton thought of the screen time setting on an iPhone as a way to drive home the severity of this issue.
So, to kick things off, we went around and asked people what their screen time was, just to show how much time teens actually spend on their phones. Many had answers that were nearly 2/3 (or more) of a school day!
For the heart of our story, we decided to speak with Sophie Koritz and Rachel Bauche. They just got done writing a research paper about how social media affects mental health in teens. We thought this fit perfectly for our story.
We also interviewed WHS Guidance Counselor Bradley Kuntzman. We had heard he has a very strong viewpoint on social media ruining teens experiences in and out of school.
For b-roll, one day while we were both out of school, several BJJTV staff members simply just got film of kids on their phones during class. It wasn't difficult to do because so many kids play games, check social media, text, etc. throughout the school day. There were times that you can hear in the footage a teacher explaining what will be on an upcoming test, but the students have earbuds in and are watching posts on Snapchat, etc. This footage just emphasized how damaging technology addiction can be to a teen in the classroom.
This story was very interesting to produce. We both learned a lot about how social media can really be a problem if not used correctly and in moderation. We hope that this story helps people of all ages understand that social media actually has an impact on your mental health.
