True Friends and Breast Cancer Survivors
by Ellie, Molly E and Jaden
We knew that from the beginning we wanted our story to be deep and meaningful. The idea of covering breast cancer stood out. Brainstorming people to interview, Ellie told us about her grandma, Kathy Scheer, and her grandma’s best friend, Barb Kassebaum, who both had gone through breast cancer together.
Setting up an interview in advance benefitted us because Ellie and Jaden both had national competitions in Florida during our editing dates. We wanted to get it done before any serious scheduling complications arose.
We left school during lunch to interview them at Kathy’s house. Bringing a light kit and using the sunroom provided amazing lighting for the interview. Both Barb and Kathy showed up wearing pink, unplanned, providing for an amazing, color-coordinated shot. We interviewed them together and individually to have a variety of soundbites to choose from.
We quickly slated and logged the interviews and wrote the script in class with ease. Ms. Turner approved of our script right away and we began editing.
We laid out the sound bites and removed the voice overs, but Ms. Turner suggested we remove the voiceovers and just let Kathy and Barb tell their story. Without the voiceovers, the story had amazing flow.
Kathy and Barb provided us with pictures from their lives together. We used those for b-roll. The photos of their shared cancer experiences really made an impact.
Their friendship inspired us to produce a heartwarming story that will hopefully shed light on an unfortunate but eye-opening situation. Having a true friend to walk down a difficult life journey is important and these two women can say they were their for each other. We really hope you enjoy this story, take their positivity, and use it in your life.
