United Way Door-to-Door Drive
by Jaden, Colleen, Jon, and Kate
When we decided to do this story, we knew it would be a great opportunity to highlight an annual event at Washington High School that still remains in the background for a lot of people. Many students hear the requests for people to participate in the United Way door-to-door drive, but they do not know what it is.
We knew we needed to get b-roll of the actual door-to-door drive, so the story made sense. Kate tagged along with Lexi Hendricks and Sequoia Smyser to get footage of them going up to houses, knocking on doors, and leaving notes on the door. When the drive itself was done she also interviewed them about the drive. They were very enthusiastic about the United Way, which made our story even better.
Later on, Jon, Colleen, and Kate went to interview Guidance Counselor Katie Sandoval about the impact the money raised has on our school and community. She gave amazing soundbites and was very fun to interview.
Finally, Jon went home and finished the script and we were ready to edit together at school.
During the editing process, we contacted the United Way to ask if we could use their pictures they took during the drive and they graciously agreed. Having those still shots helped improve our finished product.
As we reached the end of the process, we enlisted our adviser (MT) to help us work some magic to create a great introduction to the story. With that, we were finished.
We hope you find this story as informative as creating it was for us. Perhaps next fall when you hear the requests for assistance with the United Way Door-to-Door Drive, you'll be more informed and maybe even volunteer to help.
