Walk for Paige
by Molly and Emma
Paige Babbs is a WHS Junior who is battling cancer. Interact club decided to do a Walk for Paige to help raise money for Paige and her family. We knew we wanted to cover the Walk for Paige for many reasons. Also, Molly had previously talked to Interact Adviser, Mrs. Flynn, about covering the event. We knew she was on board with it.
Because we weren't scheduled to edit for a pretty long time, we got a big jump start on the story. We interviewed Lexi Hendricks, Interact President, for more information about the walk before it even happened. She provided great information that we used to write our script.
Next, we interviewed Mrs. Flynn. We knew that as the sponsor of the Interact club she could tell us more about the process that the students went through in order to organize the Walk for Paige. She told us that a lot of the event and auction planning credit goes towards the students in the Interact club, which is a huge task to take on as a high school student.
The day of the walk, Emma took a camera and filmed some great b-roll of people walking, the silent auction, and some of the games they had going on as well. When she got there, however, Mrs. Flynn asked her if she could record some messages from people at the walk to show Paige when we published the story. A lot of the messages were from friends she went to high school with, but she also got messages from her family members and grandmas. One of the messages in particular made Molly tear up when she watched it back, so we knew we had to include it in our story.
We don't typically do special messages at the end of a story like what we did for Paige's, but we're really glad our adviser, MT, let us do that. Those messages made MT cry, too. Adding them gave our story a special element we couldn't have gotten without them.
Finally, we interviewed the girl herself, Paige Babbs. Emma went to her house and set up the whole thing. The interview turned out great!
We know Paige wasn't feeling the best when Emma got there, but she put up a brave front and talked for a little bit. We are grateful she was willing to share her story with us.
The whole script writing and editing process was a breeze. It all fell into place so easily.
We want to thank everyone who helped with this story because they were the ones that made it great. We would also like to give a special mention to Paige. Paige is such a strong girl and we wish her the best of luck in her journey to overcome cancer.
